Kidney patients should limit foods rich in potassium, phosphorus and sodium. Potassium-rich foods such as bananas, oranges, potatoes and tomatoes, as well as processed meats, ready meals and fizzy drinks, should be consumed with caution. Consult your dietitian for your exact nutrition plan.
Protein needs vary depending on the stage of your kidney disease. While a low-protein diet (0.6-0.8 g/kg/day) is recommended in the early stages, protein needs increase for dialysis patients (1.2-1.5 g/kg/day). Your blood test results and disease stage should be considered to determine the most suitable protein amount for you.
Fluid intake is personalized according to the stage of the disease and your urine output. While 1.5-2 liters of fluid is generally recommended in the early stages, fluid restriction may be required in advanced stages and for dialysis patients. Your dietitian should determine your daily fluid needs.
Protein needs increase for dialysis patients, so adequate, high-quality protein intake should be ensured. While potassium, phosphorus and sodium restrictions continue, water intake should also be limited between dialysis sessions. Replacing the vitamins and minerals lost during dialysis treatment is important.
To reduce the risk of kidney stones, it is important to drink enough water (2-2.5 liters a day), limit sodium intake, avoid excessive consumption of oxalate-rich foods (spinach, chocolate, hazelnuts) and balance animal protein intake. Nutrition recommendations may vary depending on your stone type.
Low-potassium fruits are more suitable for kidney patients. Apples, pears, cranberries, strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, grapes and pineapple are among the low-potassium fruits. High-potassium fruits such as bananas, oranges, kiwis, melons and apricots should be consumed with portion control.
Rosehip tea, nettle tea and green tea can support kidney health with their antioxidant properties. However, it is important not to overdo herbal tea consumption. Patients with potassium restrictions in particular are advised to consume herbal teas in consultation with their dietitian.
Sodium restriction is generally recommended for kidney patients. Daily salt intake should not exceed 5-6 grams (1-1.5 teaspoons). High-sodium foods such as processed foods, instant soups, pickles, brined products and chips should be avoided. Lemon, vinegar and spices can be used instead of salt in meals.
Because immunosuppressive drugs are used after kidney transplantation, nutrition is especially important. Well-cooked meat and pasteurized dairy products should be preferred against infection risk, and foods that interact with medication, such as grapefruit, should be avoided. Protein needs increase after transplantation, but potassium and phosphorus levels should be monitored regularly.
High creatinine levels indicate reduced kidney function. In this case, protein intake should be controlled, adequate fluids should be consumed, and potassium-phosphorus balance should be watched. Plant-based proteins (legumes) may be preferred over red meat. It is important to have your creatinine levels monitored regularly.
Kidney patients can consume coffee and tea in moderation. However, excessive caffeine can raise blood pressure and put extra strain on the kidneys. 1-2 cups of coffee or 2-3 glasses of tea a day are generally within acceptable limits. Coffee with milk should be limited due to its phosphorus content. Consult your dietitian for the right amount for you.
Light to moderate-intensity exercise is generally safe and recommended for kidney patients. Regular walking, swimming and light resistance exercises help keep blood pressure under control, preserve muscle mass and improve overall health. However, it is important to consult your doctor before starting an exercise program.
